Objective parameters were monitored by measurement of heart rate, blood pressure and recording of standard electrocardiogram (ECG).

Is it dangerous to use Levitra with other nitrates?

Couples at risk for HIV and other STDs should practice safe sex and use condoms. Patients who take nitrate-containing medications or use recreational nitrate drugs known as “poppers” shouldn’t take Levitra. The combination of Levitra with nitrates can cause your blood pressure to drop to abnormally low levels suddenly. This could make you faint or become dizzy. In some cases, you could even suffer a heart attack or a stroke.

Is Levitra stronger than Viagra?

You should also avoid Levitra if you have heart problems. If your family has a history of heart disease, your doctor may opt for another treatment for your erectile dysfunction. People with low blood pressure should also refrain from taking Levitra and other PDE-5 inhibitors. Before you take any medication, seek medical advice. Provide your doctor with your medical history. Moreover, blood samples were examined in regard to possible alterations of hematological and clinical chemistry parameters. Each of the two treatment periods consisted of one profile day and at 24-hours follow-up examination.

Precaution Rationale
Cardiovascular health assessment Risk of cardiac events
Alcohol consumption Can impair effectiveness or increase side effects
Use with caution in elderly Altered pharmacodynamics
Underlying vision issues Rare visual side effects

Subjects were discharged from the study ward about 1–2 hours after the last examination on days 0 and 1, provided there were no medical objections.

Before Using

Results: Compared to placebo, administration of vardenafil hydrochloride lead to a temporary significant increase of Farnsworth–Munsell D100 total error score after 1 and 6 hours as well as in error lines 3 and 4 after 1 hour. Twenty-four hours after administration there was no significant alteration of total error score or of any error line. While latency of electroretinogram b-wave remained unaffected, amplitudes showed a significant decrease compared to placebo 1 hour following administration. While other ocular examinations did not reveal any differences in general some mild to moderate but no serious adverse events have been reported. Conclusion: Despite temporary changes in retinal function our study reports good tolerability of vardenafil in regard to ocular side effects.

Are vardenafil and tadalafil available over the counter?

Keywords: phosophodiesterase-5 inhibitor, retinal function, color vision, electroretinogram, adverse events, placebo-controlled Vardenafil (Levitra®; Bayer AG, Leverkusen, Germany) has been developed as an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE-5) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. PDE-5 inhibitors like vardenafil or sildenafil (Viagra®) do not have a direct relaxant effect on the corpus cavernosum; however, they enhance the effect of nitric oxide (NO) by inhibiting PDE-5, which is responsible for degradation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate in the corpus cavernosum.1 When sexual stimulation causes local release of NO, inhibition of PDE-5 by vardenafil causes smooth muscle relaxation and inflow of blood to the corpus cavernosum.2,3 Vardenafil has been shown to be effective and safe when administered to patients with erectile dysfunction in placebo-controlled studies over a dose range of 5–20 mg once daily and up to 40 mg twice daily in multiple-dose Phase I and II studies.4–6 The most frequent adverse events (AEs) were headache, flush, rhinitis, and dyspepsia.7,8 Typical ocular side effects seen under treatment with PDE-5 inhibitors are disturbed color vision and temporary effects on the electroretinogram (ERG), which may be due to the fact that PDE-6, typically located in the eye, is also inhibited to a certain degree by PDE-5 inhibitors;9–14 this may depend on the selectivity of PDE-5 inhibition.15 However, these side effects have been exclusively investigated for sildenafil. Therefore, this study was designed to especially investigate the possible influence of vardenafil-induced PDE-5 inhibition on ocular side effects and the function of the retina. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the possible influence of a single oral dose of 40 mg of vardenafil on color vision in normal-eyed male subjects measured by performing Farnsworth–Munsell 100 test at 1, 6 and 24 hours after drug administration. Secondary objectives of the study were further investigations of the eye including effects on retinal function as well as the safety and overall tolerability of vardenafil. There was a wash-out phase of at least one week between each of the two periods.

  • Levitra is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
  • The active ingredient in Levitra is vardenafil.
  • Levitra helps increase blood flow to the penis during sexual activity.
  • It is usually taken 25 to 60 minutes before sexual activity.
  • The typical starting dose is 10 mg, adjustable based on effectiveness and side effects.
  • Levitra should not be used more than once a day.
  • Common side effects include headache, flushing, and nasal congestion.
  • Levitra is contraindicated with nitrates and certain heart medications.

For each subject the study ended with the final examination approximately 1–2 weeks after the second study period.

Step Description
PDE5 inhibition Blocks enzyme PDE5, increasing cGMP levels
Increased cGMP Causes smooth muscle relaxation in corpora cavernosa
Erection initiation Blood flow into the penis increases, facilitating an erection

The total duration of the study was four months.

What if I think I am sick as a result of taking Levitra?

To our knowledge this is the first investigation on retinal function following vardenafil administration and the first placebo-controlled study on ocular side effects for the use of vardenafil at all. This was a single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, twofold crossover study with an administration of a single oral dose of a 40 mg BAY 38–9456 (vardenafil hydrochloride) given as 2 tablets of 20 mg in 24 healthy male subjects. The trial was registered at the District Council Cologne, Germany under the registration number BAY 38-9456 / 10197. In detail, demographic features of all subjects are listed in Table 1. Starting from the time of administration, subsequent investigations of the eye were performed according to the study flowchart (Table 2). Eye-specific inclusion/exclusion criteria were examined for both eyes.

  • Levitra works by blocking PDE5 enzyme, enhancing erectile response.
  • Patients should not engage in strenuous activity immediately after taking Levitra.
  • It is often prescribed when other ED treatments have failed or are unsuitable.
  • Levitra has a rapid onset, with effects usually seen within 30-60 minutes.
  • The medication is available in various dosages to tailor treatment.
  • Alcohol and high-fat foods can impair the absorption of Levitra.
  • Women should not take Levitra as it is not approved for female use.
  • Regular follow-up with a healthcare provider helps monitor treatment efficacy.

However, only one eye was included for study use.

Is Levitra or Viagra more effective?

If you have had a heart attack or suffer from any other heart issues, such as an irregular heartbeat, angina, or heart failure, you must tell your doctor. In some cases, it may be unsafe for you to engage in sexual activity while taking Levitra because it could cause a heart attack. In addition, you should inform your doctor about all drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements you use. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and recreational drugs. Your doctor needs this information to ensure an adverse health reaction doesn’t occur.

Can vardenafil and tadalafil be taken together?

Your doctor must also consider any allergies you may have. People with an allergic reaction to Levitra may break out in hives. If you or a loved one has experienced any dangerous side effects while taking Levitra, contact your doctor or other healthcare professional immediately. You may also want to meet with an experienced product liability attorney to discuss your options and protect your legal rights. If you are hurt while taking Levitra or other erectile dysfunction drugs, you may have a legal claim. The study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki (1964) in the revised version of 1996 (Somerset West) and 2000 (Edinburgh), the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) GCP Guideline (Note for Guidance on Good Clinical Practice) and the German drug law [Arzneimittelgesetz].

What are the main differences between Levitra and Viagra?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued safety alerts regarding these side effects. It has cautioned that while no medical evidence shows Levitra causes these health conditions, you must still be careful. If you experience sudden vision or hearing loss, stop taking the drug and talk to your healthcare professional immediately. Don’t take Levitra with other nitrate-containing medications. Combining the medicine with a nitrate drug can lead to sudden loss of blood pressure.

In some cases, patients have alleged that taking Levitra with other nitrates also causes heart attack and stroke. Despite these claims, a recent study by a Danish team found no correlation between Levitra and adverse cardiovascular events. The study did warn patients not to take other nitrates within 24-48 hours, depending on which medication they are taking. A man who uses Levitra could potentially impregnate his female partner. No, Levitra doesn’t prevent the spread of HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
